First Steps to Learning Scottish Gaelic |

| Scottish Gaelic is a member of the Goidelic branch of Celtic languages. This branch also includes the Irish and Manx languages. It is distinct from the Brythonic branch of the Celtic languages, which includes Welsh, Cornish and Breton. Scottish, Manx and Irish Gaelic are all descended from Old Irish. The language is called Scottish Gaelic, Scots Gaelic, Highland Gaelic, to avoid confusion with the other Goidelic languages. The estimated number of speakers is 60,000 in Scotland, and about 150,000 people around the world have some Scottish Gaelic language ability.
First Steps to Learning Scottish Gaelic aims to provide a stepped opportunity for improving language skills; it provides the four communicative skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing. |
